Spotlight On...Patrena Murray

Name: Patrena Murray

Hometown: Born in Jamaica, West Indies resides in Brooklyn, NY.

Education: BFA form Suny Purchase.

Select Credits: Masculinity Max (Public Studio), The Winter’s Tale (The Public’s Mobile Unit), A Midsummer’s Night Dream (The Delacorte).

Why theater?: Theater would be life itself if it didn’t have the frame around it.

Who do you play in the hollower?: Otto Ottley-Borlo. She’s hanging on by a string that’s about to snap.

What is it like being a part of the hollower?: I have to rise up to meet the script. Rehearsals have been great. I’m working with a fantastic cast and crew.

What kind of theater speaks to you? What or who inspires you as an artist?: All theater speaks to me, even what I’m unsure about. Life inspires me as an artist. Every moment is ripe with “stuff.”

Any roles you’re dying to play?: Lottie in By the Way, Meet Vera Stark.

What’s your favorite showtune?: “The Music of the Night”

If you could work with anyone you’ve yet to work with, who would it be?: Ava DuVernay/Dame Judi Dench.

Who would play you in a movie about yourself and what would it be called?: Queen Latifah in “Trena.”

If you could go back in time and see any play or musical you missed, what would it be?: Would have definitely loved to see what Shakespeare was doing, especially with Hamlet.

What show have you recommended to your friends?: As You Like It, directed by Laurie Woolery and music by Shaina Taub (Delacorte).

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?: Coffee with cigarettes and beer with cigarettes.
