Punk or Provocateur with...Joel DeCandio

Name: Joel DeCandio

Hometown: Jacksonville, FL

Tell us about The Roaring Girl: The Roaring Girl is a Jacobean city comedy about a cross-dressing woman called Moll Cutpurse, based on real-life Mary Frith.  Go read about her; she’s really fascinating!

Describe The Roaring Girl in 3 words: Hysterical. Sexy. Poignant

Who do you play in The Roaring Girl?: Laxton!

Describe your character in 3 words: Lazy. Charming. Cunning.

Which company member is most likely to be a roaring boy or girl?: Well, I think our show’s roaring girl, Malloree Delayne Hill, has that part down now!

Most likely to get in a brawl?: Oh, that’s tough!  I don’t know that I can answer that!  Everyone is so sweet!

Who’s the fanciest?: Jacob Garrett Owen!  He’s always so nicely dressed!

What is the best thing about being a part of The Roaring Girl?: Hands down, our cast and creative team.  I love them all so much.

What is your favorite moment in The Roaring Girl?: Malloree Delayne Hill and I just finished our fight scene today.  Jon Meyer choreographed it, and it’s pretty badass!

Why The Roaring Girl now?: Oh, I definitely think this is such a perfect time to be staging this show.  We’re dealing with so much now in the way of discrimination, sexual and gender identity, self-worth… I think it absolutely resonates with everything that’s been going on today, and I think that will be very obvious to audiences.  I’m really hoping people are able to come to this show and take something back with them.

Punk or Provocateur?: Wouldn’t you like to know…

Have you ever performed in rep before? What are the challenges/struggles?: I have, only once before.  I really don’t mind it too much!  I suppose one of the biggest challenges is sharing the space between the two shows.

What are you most excited to see in the other play?: I’m just excited to see the show, in general!  The other cast is really sweet, and I’m excited to go see what they’ve been working on!

Why should we come see Punks and Provocateurs?: I just think it’s going to be a wonderful journey for audiences.  I think everybody will be able to find something within the shows that resonates with them.
